Here is a list of common problems with simple solutions (may NOT always be right), that people will usually overlook or deny.

Washers
  • Washer not working - is it plugged in?, is the water turned on?, is the lid closed?
  • Washer Stops half-way through cycle - cold water turned on?
  • Washer just hums (does not know the words) - check belt

Dryers
  • Dryer not working - is it plugged in?, is the door closed?, is the outside vent frozen over (weather permitting of coarse!)
  • Dryer just hums (does not know the words - check belt
  • Dryer does nothing - Whirlpool family - check belt.
  • Dryer does nothing - breaker flipped.
  • Dryer has NO heat but runs - check breaker - flip breaker off and then on - sometimes only half a breaker goes!

Ranges
  • Range not working - is it plugged in?
  • Oven not working properly - check timer!

Refrigerators
  • Fridge does not run - is it plugged in?, is it turned on?
  • Manual Defrost - is there more than 1/8" inch frost build-up? - defrost.
  • Frost Free - Is there ice at the back or floor of the freezer section - defrost problem is likely

These problems are all simple ones that a lot of people say, "yes, I checked that" and then a service man/woman comes to their home and takes a few minutes to fix their problem and then the customer gets mad at them for charging for 2 minutes of work. At Assiniboine Appliance we see this at least once a month.
These solutions are only 'some' of the possible solutions. If these fixes do NOT work ( and are NOT always guaranteed to work! ), please phone a service man/woman - do NOT phone an electrician, a plumber, etc, phone an Appliance Service Technician.

When phoning in a service call please have the following ready for whomever you phone your local repair shop:
  • The MAKE of the machine (Frigidaire, General Electric, Whirlpool, etc).
  • An approximate age - this may not seem important to you, but it does help your service man out.
  • The model and serial number are also handy to have as usually the serial number tells the age of the machine as well.
  • What the machine is doing/not doing. This is the most important.
If you have your own TIP to add, please e-mail me with your tip and I will add it to the list.
