Oceans
What We Find In the Ocean
Grade: Two Math Topic: Estimation Strand: Shape and Space (measurement)
Learning Outcomes: SS-III.1.3
Learning Resources:
Articles that one would find under the ocean, sand, gravel, water.
Large clear containers to pour the manipulatives into. (possibly a fish tank)
A variety of different sized containers to pour the different materials from.
Grouping: This activity will be done as an entire class.
Assessment: The assessment for this activity will be based on the student’s ability to make estimations and then perhaps to change those estimations if they are incorrect.
Activating Strategies: Using a large fish tank with levels pre-marked for the sand/gravel, and water. The teacher will ask the students to guess how many of which container would be best to use to fill the large container (aquarium).
Applying Strategies: Using a number line on a whiteboard, have the students write an estimation (number) on a post it note and attach it to the appropriate place on the number line. On an estimation sheet that the students will have the teacher will ask the students to write their first estimation in the appropriate column. If the student’s initial estimation is incorrect and there are numbers on the number line that are close and or goal isn’t yet reached the teacher will give the students a chance to re-estimate and change their guess. This continues until the class has completed filling the container to the desired level.
Learning Styles:
Auditory: Students must follow instructions
Visual: Students make estimations based on size of container and the space remaining in re-estimation.
Interpersonal: Students use their own judgment of how many of a give container will fit into the largest container, and their re-estimations on their charts.
