Shell Sort & More

Grade:  Two   Math Topic:  Sorting  Strands:  Patterns & Relations, Shape & Space

Learning Outcomes:

PR-I.1.2

SP-III.2.2

SP-IV.1.2

Learning Resources:

Refer to Materials on attached AIMS Shell Sort document

Flexible Grouping:

Students will work together as a whole class, in small groups, and in partners.

Assessment:

Distribute to each group of four students one set of keys, stamps, magnets, or other items which have varied attributes.  Have them construct one representation of the data.  Instruct them to pass their graph or diagram to a neighbouring group for interpretation.  Have the group interpreting the data write one or two true statement about the data.

Activating Strategies:

Provide the class with a set of 12 shells and ask them to sort them.  On chart paper, record the different categories they used to sort the shells.  Ask:  “What is the best way to show the data that we have collected about the shells?”  Explain that the shells will be used in several forms of data representation.  Ask students to share observations about the various shells.

Acquiring Strategies:

Please refer to Parts 2, 3, 4, and 7 in attached AIMS Shell Sort Document.

Applying Strategies:

Please refer to Parts 5, 6, and 8

Extension:

§         Ask students what else they think they could use to construct the various kinds of data organization displays.

§         Have students research various kinds of shells and use this knowledge to establish attributers and descriptors for new representations of data.

Different Ways of Learning:

Auditory:

Visual:  Observing creation of graphs and labelling data information.

Tactile:  Sorting shells, organizing data on graphs.

Kinesthetic:
