Oceans

Oceanographer Fish Count

Grade:  Two                           Math Topic:  Estimation        Strands:  Number (Concepts)

Learning Outcomes:

N-I.1.2

Learning Resources:

Little ocean life manipulatives

Estimation jar

Math journals

Flexible Grouping:

Students will work individually.

Assessment:

Observe math journal to check comparison of the estimate with the actual number.  Has the student recorded the appropriate response—higher or lower.

Activating Strategies:

Display the estimation jar in a place that the students will take notice.  Say that there are billions of fish and other ocean creatures in the oceans.  They will be oceanographers and must estimate how many creatures are in this area (the jar).  During the Oceans unit, have each child do the activity.  Have a list of the students’ names and once they have completed the task, have them check their names off.

See attached Instruction Sheet for Students

Applying Strategies:

The students will make an estimate of the number of ocean creatures in the jar.  The students will then count the ocean creatures by 1s and record the actual number on their charts.  Have the students print the following sentence in their Math Journals:  “My estimate was __________ than the actual number of ocean creatures.”  Next, have the students count the ocean creatures by 10s, 5s and 2s.

Different Ways of Learning:

Auditory:  Verbal instructions

Visual:  Chart demonstration and counting demonstration

Tactile:  Counting ocean creatures, recording estimate and actual

Kinesthetic:
