Glenboro Results
July 1/2004: The Social Misfits from Brandon, Manitoba finished with a 1-1 record in the annual Glenboro softball tournament. In the opener the Misfits toppled the opposition 8-2. Of special note in this game, was the first ever inside the park home run by a Misfit. The blast/run heard around the world was pulled off by 3rd baseman Earl Cheasley as he managed to beat the throw home. Misfit pitching made short work of the opposition surrendering only the 2 runs in the game.

They followed that up with an 11-3 loss to the Dragon Slayers in game 2 that ended the Misfits afternoon. In this contest, the Misfits unfortunately gave up seven runs in the first inning, and never could make up the necessary ground on their cross-town rivals.

Hi-Lites: Outstanding catches in right field by Shelley and Donna robbing batters of sure extra base hits, $4 gate admission that covered the tournament entry fees, Earl's inside the park home run that had the whole fair grounds talking, great sliding catch by Calvin on a shallow hit ball to center field, outstanding catching and signal calling by Erin behind the plate

Lo-Lites: the long lineup for the pancake breakfast, being told that you cannot throw a 'spin' ball in game one, giving up 7 runs in game two to start the game, silent bats resulting in few base runners in that same game

Cheasley Qualifies for the 4x100 in Athens
July 20, 2004: In what many track observers are calling a surprise decision, Athletics Canada earlier today announced that Earl Cheasley of Brandon, Manitoba had been added to the men's 4x100 relay sprint team. Relay coach Glenroy Gilbert doesn't see what all the fuss is about. "Word of Mr. Cheasley's blazing speed was brought to our attention shortly after his inside the park home run in Glenboro" said the athletics coach. "We invited him to the Olympic qualifying trials in June and he posted the 6th quickest time, enough to earn him a spot" he continued. Likely to join Earl on the relay team include Nick Macrozonaris, Pierre Browne, Anson Henry, Charles Allen, and Jermaine Joseph.

"We are not sure if he will see any time of the track for sure," said Glenroy. "The decision on the final relay team will be made following the meet and in conjunction with Athletics Canada" he continued.

"I have been quite busy this summer and wasn't sure if I could fit the games into my schedule" said Earl. "I didn't want to travel all that distance only to become a spectator" he continued. "I did receive some assurances from Glenroy, about my role on the team, and he informed me that there are no positions on the track that are set in stone. I may have to run lead-off here, but maybe at another meet, I may run the backstretch or the third leg or anchor leg," said Earl.

Survivor: The Truth
May 14, 2004: Fresh off his 2nd place performance at Survivor All-Stars, Boston Rob today let everyone in on a little secret. "Everything that I needed to learn to play the game of Survivor, I learned on a camping trip with the bookends last year in Souris, Manitoba" said Boston Rob. "In 3 short days these 2 showed me how to build a shelter, boil water, how to interact positively with others, and how to approach hot women," added Boston Rob. Earl, who has been known to spend the odd long weekend on fishing trips was especially helpful, as he showed me the finer art of fishing" joked Rob.

For their part the 2 were extremely pleased to see The Robfather go so far in the game. "It's clear he played the best game and always gave it 110% in all the challenges" said Earl. "He followed the plan that I had detailed for him to near perfect execution" added Jody. "For years now, I have been calling Earl a 'dumbass', and I found it very satisfying to see how he worked it into the game in calling Big Tom a 'dumbass' as well" he continued.

Season Preview
May 27/04: The Misfits enter 2004 with a substantially altered everyday lineup from a year ago and several key additions to the pitching staff. Misfits staff reporter, Ivan Toraballoff, who has covered the Misfits since their inception, breaks down the component parts of the Misfits while offering his analysis and projections.

Key Additions: Reg Leclerc, Erin Leclerc, Dean Johnson, and Shelley Cords

Key Subtractions: Lindsay Loree

Newest Misfit: Reg Leclerc

Reasons to get excited: Manager Bruce Luebke has the juice and personality to handle a tough, veteran clubhouse. The pitching staff that gave up too many runs, and too many home runs, has been revamped with the additions of Leclerc and Johnson. The rotation now looks solid. The team's top 2 hitters from last season, Craig and Jody return to lead the Misfits charge. If star outfielder Shawn Bolack can regain his home run swing, Mike Gillespie continues his torrid pace of last season, and Earl Cheasley swings the bat as well as he did at the end of last season, then the offense should take of itself. Johnson and Leclerc should add some much-needed power as well. The women already knee deep in talent have been bolstered by Shelly Cords, who looked impressive in her pre-season debut.

Reasons to worry: Al Sellars. Also, the starting lineup, which was the oldest in the league last season, is the same, only a year older. The team boasts only a handful of players under the age of 30. Cam Moir, appears to have suffered an off season shoulder injury, and it may hamper his ability in the outfield. Others may have to pick up the slack. Carla Richardson and Jackie Bolack are slick infielders, but the sheer age of the roster equals poor range in the field. The team set a record last season for committing the most errors in a 14 game season. With the exception of Shawn Bolcak, Reg Leclerc, and Dean Johnson, the club does not exhibit a lot of speed.

Where can one find Sellars in the Winter?

Sellars Placed on The IR
March 14/2004--The Social Misfits today placed outfielder Al Sellars on the disabled list after he inured his lip while practicing catching fly balls. " I thought that I would get an early start to the season, so Brett and I went out, and I had Brett hitting pop flys to me" said Al. "I kinda lost one in the sun and the next thing I know it hit me square on the lip" he added.

"The second the ball hit him, he started crying like a little girl" laughed Brett. "We then drove to the hospital where my dad had to get 3 stiches" he continued. "Maybe now I won't have to listen to him talk so damn much" Brett concluded.

Canadian Idol
January 01/04--While the American's have Rueben Stoddard, the Canadians tried to counter with Snickers, however he was unsuccessful in his bid to become the latest Canadian Idol. "I actually am quite proud of my accomplishments," said Jody. "I made it to the final 7 and my goal was just to make the Top 10, so overall I am very pleased." he continued.

Critics agree that his first 2 performances on the show were breath taking and show stopping. "He showed a wide vocal range and is very light on his feet for a big guy" said one judge. "He totally blew people away with his version of 'It's Raining Men' and then to follow it with Rod Stewarts 'Forever Young" was sheer brilliance" exclaimed one enthusiastic studio audience member.

For his final number Jody sang Centerfield, the old John Fogerty classic, and failed to win the judges over this time. "It would have been nice if he had sang a song about something other then baseball" noted the one critic.

Val 1-Misfits 0
J
uly 8/04: The life of a baseball scorekeeper can be a tough one. Just ask Val Giesbrecht, the official scorekeeper of the Social Misfits softball club in Brandon, Manitoba. "Week in and week out, I take my free time to head out to beautiful Fas Gas Park to keep score for the Misfits, and each week the complaints just kept growing" said Val. "One week I incorrectly recorded the strikeouts, the next I hadn't circled the doubles, or left out recording a triple" added Val. "After hearing weeks of whining I took it upon myself to develop the 'Val Giesbrect' method of score keeping." continued Ms. Giesbrect.

Her new system for score keeping includes some funky coloring project that involves most of the colors of the rainbow that this statistician has yet to figure out. She has also elected to track the pitching performances using different colors and has taken to leaving little notes all along the score sheet.

What initially started as an inside joke may prove fruitful, as Val has submitted her method of score keeping to Softball Canada, and is expecting word back very soon as to whether or not they will adopt her concept as the standard for all of baseball. "I just wanted to devise a system that would reduce the amount of bellyaching that I faced each week," said Val.

26 Marrying 40
April 27/04: Social Misfits team member Al Sellars wishes to announce that earlier this evening he officially became engaged to his girlfriend of several months, Angie. The marriage proposal took place at the Landmark Theater in Brandon, as the couple were set to watch the movie "13 Going on 30". "It just felt like the right time to propose" said Al, who was obviously overjoyed by the news.

The proposal itself was both well thought out and executed. Al placed the ring in a box of popcorn and patiently waited for Angie to find the ring as she ate her way through the popcorn. Frustrated by the lack of progress in polishing off the $3.00 box of popcorn, Al excused himself and left the theater for a few minutes. While he told her that he was going to go and get more butter on the popcorn, he actually went out and dumped out some of the popcorn, thereby reducing the volume of popcorn that they had to consume. Once he returned to his seat, Angie started in on the popcorn again, only to stop once she came across the ring in the popcorn box. She looked at Al, and asked him what this was. At that point, Al proposed and she, to most people's surprise said YES.

"I was totally nervous and anxious for her to find that ring," said Al. "At one point she had her fingertips very near the ring and I just wanted to yell out 'Right there', right there, right there' but I held off" added Al.

Excited by the development of events the two left the theater, asked for their money back, as the movie was not yet 20 minutes in. They then came home and notified everyone of their pending wedding. A wedding date has been set for July of 2005.

Bachelor Game for Love
January 25/2004--Brandon athlete courts bevy of beauties on TV .

He's used to going down town on the baseball diamond, but Brandon, Manitoba native Mike Gillespie will soon switch venues to hot tubs and limousines.

ABC announced yesterday the Social Misfits outfielder will star in the fifth installment of The Bachelor.

The single Gillespie -- a sandy-haired, 6-foot-2 looker with big bucks, charm and a soft side to boot -- becomes the first-ever Canadian to star on the popular reality show. And when the weekly episodes begin airing in April, millions could tune in to watch as he tackles a field of 25 beautiful, eligible and eager candidates, whittling them down via the all-important rose ceremony to just one.

"I meet a lot of girls, it's very true, but I really haven't met one yet that I feel is sincerely interested in Mike Gillespie," said Gillespie, during an interview with entertainment show Extra last night. "This is a chance for me to get on (The Bachelor) and find someone really special and important to me."

Having a bevy of beauties' attention on television shouldn't be that much different for Mike from a regular post-game night out on the town in Brandon.

"He's the guy, he's the hottest commodity in the club," Misfits outfielder Shawn Bolack told the Brandon Sun yesterday. "Every girl talks to him ... all the girls, when they like someone on the team, it's Mike Gillespie."

Bolcak last spoke to his buddy Friday, before he left his Brandon digs for Los Angeles to start filming the show.

"He seemed excited, a little nervous. He didn't know what was in store for him, the first time," said Bolack. "It's a big show."

Gillespie shows his sensitive side during the Extra interview, cooking, opening a bottle of wine and admitting, "I'm not afraid to tell somebody 'I love you.' "

He describes his ideal match as "someone who's real cool, real down-to-earth, real fun, wants to get out and see the world, and hopefully wants to have a big family."

He says his teammates inspired him to do the show.

Palmer's Bachelor gig has been in the works for awhile, with him asking Social Misfits coach Bruce Leubke's permission to take the job back in mid-season.
