July
8/04: The life of a baseball scorekeeper can be a tough one.
Just ask Val Giesbrecht, the official scorekeeper of the Social
Misfits softball club in Brandon, Manitoba. "Week in
and week out, I take my free time to head out to beautiful
Fas Gas Park to keep score for the Misfits, and each week
the complaints just kept growing" said Val. "One
week I incorrectly recorded the strikeouts, the next I hadn't
circled the doubles, or left out recording a triple"
added Val. "After hearing weeks of whining I took it
upon myself to develop the 'Val Giesbrect' method of score
keeping." continued Ms. Giesbrect.

Her
new system for score keeping includes some funky coloring
project that involves most of the colors of the rainbow that
this statistician has yet to figure out. She has also elected
to track the pitching performances using different colors
and has taken to leaving little notes all along the score
sheet.
What initially
started as an inside joke may prove fruitful, as Val has submitted
her method of score keeping to Softball Canada, and is expecting
word back very soon as to whether or not they will adopt her
concept as the standard for all of baseball. "I just
wanted to devise a system that would reduce the amount of
bellyaching that I faced each week," said Val.

Marrying 40
April 27/04: Social Misfits team member Al Sellars
wishes to announce that earlier this evening he officially
became engaged to his girlfriend of several months, Angie.
The marriage proposal took place at the Landmark Theater in
Brandon, as the couple were set to watch the movie "13
Going on 30". "It just felt like the right time
to propose" said Al, who was obviously overjoyed by the
news.

The
proposal itself was both well thought out and executed. Al
placed the ring in a box of popcorn and patiently waited for
Angie to find the ring as she ate her way through the popcorn.
Frustrated by the lack of progress in polishing off the $3.00
box of popcorn, Al excused himself and left the theater for
a few minutes. While he told her that he was going to go and
get more butter on the popcorn, he actually went out and dumped
out some of the popcorn, thereby reducing the volume of popcorn
that they had to consume. Once he returned to his seat, Angie
started in on the popcorn again, only to stop once she came
across the ring in the popcorn box. She looked at Al, and
asked him what this was. At that point, Al proposed and she,
to most people's surprise said YES.
"I
was totally nervous and anxious for her to find that ring,"
said Al. "At one point she had her fingertips very near
the ring and I just wanted to yell out 'Right there', right
there, right there' but I held off" added Al.
Excited
by the development of events the two left the theater, asked
for their money back, as the movie was not yet 20 minutes
in. They then came home and notified everyone of their pending
wedding. A wedding date has been set for July of 2005.

Bachelor
Game for Love
January 25/2004--Brandon athlete courts bevy of beauties
on TV .
He's
used to going down town on the baseball diamond, but Brandon,
Manitoba native Mike Gillespie will soon switch venues to
hot tubs and limousines.
ABC announced
yesterday the Social Misfits outfielder will star in the fifth
installment of The Bachelor.
The single
Gillespie -- a sandy-haired, 6-foot-2 looker with big bucks,
charm and a soft side to boot -- becomes the first-ever Canadian
to star on the popular reality show. And when the weekly episodes
begin airing in April, millions could tune in to watch as
he tackles a field of 25 beautiful, eligible and eager candidates,
whittling them down via the all-important rose ceremony to
just one.
"I
meet a lot of girls, it's very true, but I really haven't
met one yet that I feel is sincerely interested in Mike Gillespie,"
said Gillespie, during an interview with entertainment show
Extra last night. "This is a chance for me to get on
(The Bachelor) and find someone really special and important
to me."

Having
a bevy of beauties' attention on television shouldn't be that
much different for Mike from a regular post-game night out
on the town in Brandon.
"He's
the guy, he's the hottest commodity in the club," Misfits
outfielder Shawn Bolack told the Brandon Sun yesterday. "Every
girl talks to him ... all the girls, when they like someone
on the team, it's Mike Gillespie."
Bolcak
last spoke to his buddy Friday, before he left his Brandon
digs for Los Angeles to start filming the show.
"He
seemed excited, a little nervous. He didn't know what was
in store for him, the first time," said Bolack. "It's
a big show."
Gillespie
shows his sensitive side during the Extra interview, cooking,
opening a bottle of wine and admitting, "I'm not afraid
to tell somebody 'I love you.' "
He describes
his ideal match as "someone who's real cool, real down-to-earth,
real fun, wants to get out and see the world, and hopefully
wants to have a big family."
He says
his teammates inspired him to do the show.
Palmer's
Bachelor gig has been in the works for awhile, with him asking
Social Misfits coach Bruce Leubke's permission to take the
job back in mid-season.
