Paths & Sidewalks

Q. Can we get a bikepath along the east side of 34th south of Richmond? It would connect the Richmond path with the sidewalk on Aberdeen? (Oct 07)

Response from Operations: We do not have this location planned for in the next 2 years. In 2008 we will evaluate all locations again to see where the city needs to focus on new paths. (Oct 07)

Q. Can we get a crosswalk installed on Parkdale at the intersection of Durum/Wakomma? (Oct 07)

I have forwarded this to traffic to get an answer. (Oct 07)

Response from Traffic: The crosswalk has been installed at this location. (Nov 07)

Q. Is there a reason why the crosswalk on Willowdale (at Ashgrove) is on the west side of the intersection rather than the east side? Can it be moved? (Oct 07)

A. Response from Traffic: Unfortunately with this request the answer is no. The design implemented at this location was the result of a review by a traffic consultant and it was determined that this was the best location for a crosswalk given where all the pedestrian activity was taking place at this intersection with the 7-Eleven store on the North side of Willowdale. There are considerable geometric improvements at this location for pedestrian safety as well as advance warning signs for pedestrians. Even if the crosswalk was moved, pedestrians will still cross at this location, now making the probability of an accident higher at this location. I would encourage motorist to slow down at this location and be aware that they are approaching a crosswalk with the chance of pedestrians being present on the South side of Willowdale. (Oct 07)

Q . What are the rules for riding a bike on a sidewalk? (Oct 07)

A. Response from Police: Sections 149 (8) & (9) of the Provincial Highway Traffic Act prohibits riding a bicycle on the sidewalk, unless the rear tire is less than 410 millimetres (about 16 inches, so young children can ride on the sidewalk). Also if the sidewalk is clearly marked by signage that a bike can be operated on the sidewalk then this would be within the law. Bike paths in Brandon are the example of this. They are essentially a walking / bike sidewalk and are signed as same.

We will be conducting a campaign in the spring of 2008 that will include bikes on sidewalks. Our Bike Patrols do it now as part of their efforts. (Oct 07)

Q . Can we fix the sidewalk in front of 1204 and 1166 26th street? The roots from the trees beside the sidewalk are raising it. (Oct 07)

I have requested operations to look at this. (Oct 07)

Q. The doggie bag trays (beside the bikepath) are sometimes empty when we try to find a bag. Is there a schedule that they are filled on? Can we report to someone that they are empty? (Oct 07)

Response from Operations: This area is one of the most popular in terms of use of the doggie bags. The bins are filled on a weekly basis at the same time staff empties refuse containers - this is a scheduled task. It sounds as though in some cases staff have overfilled the doggie bag dispensers, making them difficult to remove from the dispensers by residents. In speaking with staff, it appears this has been done in an effort to put as many doggie bags in the dispenser so it will last to the next servicing. This issue has been communicated to staff in the past, and we will follow up again.

In terms of keeping these full to the next week, we will have staff identify the most popular locations in this area and evaluate the need for extra dispensers. Please pass along specific locations for complaints if you have these and we will place on our watch list. Additional dispensers will add capacity to the area and will help in keeping the dispensers full to the next servicing. We will also request that staff continue to monitor these to ensure that containers are not consistently running out of doggie bags prior to servicing. It is important to note, that we do experience issues in some areas from time to time where doggie bags are taken in large quantities.

Residents can call in to 729-2290 for matters relating to the Sanitation Section, including notices for service on walk way bins and dispensers. (Oct 07)

Response from Operations: we have installed more dispensers along Richmond Avenue between 26th and 34th, as well as along 34th between Richmond and Victoria Avenues. (Oct 07)

Q. When is the city going to complete the bikepath on Maryland, from 20th to 18th street?

Response from Development Services: Once we have received the development plans for 18th street from the province, we will determine what needs to be done to complete the bikepath. I have attached the letter from development services explaining this: Maryland Walkway 18th to 20th

Q. 34th Street Bike path, south of Willowdale. It is very dark at night because of the trees. Can they be trimmed before fall? (Sept 06)

A. Response from Operations: Cleaned up during the summer/fall. (Sept 06)

Response from Operations: Will look at making this part of the Yearly program.

Response from Operations: Scheduled to be cleaned up this winter, early spring. (Oct 07)
