Snow Removal

Q. What is the policy for cleaning sidewalks and bicycle paths after a snowfall? (Dec 07)

Response from Operations: Our sidewalk clearing program involves clearing the sidewalks that support the bus routes. After a significant snowfall these areas, along with the pathways that extend along main roadways, are the initial focus of our sidewalk snow clearing program. The sidewalks that border our public facilities are also the first areas that are cleared. Once these areas are cleared, staff clear the pathways that extend through the various parks.

During our sidewalk/pathway clearing we do not remove the snow ridge that is created. There would be significant costs associated with clearing this ridge at every driveway/sidewalk entrance at each property. There would also be potential for damages to sod, landscapes, and irrigation sprinkler heads.

Q. After any snowfall, the walking path thru the Parkdale park doesn't get cleared for upwards of ten days to two weeks. However, the walking paths along Richmond and 26th that are most frequented by walkers and joggers are done within 24 hours. Why can't the park be done during the same go-round thru the area .... especially when so many kids depend upon that travel route? (Dec 07)

A. Response from Operations: Our first priority during a snow event is to focus on streets, sidewalks adjacent to a bus route and the walking paths that run along the streets. Once we are through these our attention is focused on the paths that run through the parks. I appreciate that the pathway through this park is used and I can assure you that the majority of the pathways through the parks are used in the winter months. Our challenge is that we have to prioritize our maintenance requirements with the resources we have. I will follow up with staff to ensure these areas are scheduled for clearing immediately after the priority routes are cleared (Dec 07).

Q. Who is responsible for clearing the snow in the new Brookwood development (the city or the developer)? (Oct 07)

I have asked operations to respond to this question. (Oct 07)

Q. 34th Street South of Aberdeen. When they clean snow, they are pushing the snow to the east which blocks the driveways, why can they not push it to the west into the ditch? There are no houses on the west side. (Aug 06)

A. Response from Operations: Changed from snow plows (graders) to truck plows because they move quicker. In 2006/2007 the driveways will be cleaned at the time of the snow plowing. (Sept 06)

Response from Operations: This should be addressed with our recent policy of clearing driveways. We cannot clear snow with our truck plows going against traffic. (Oct 07)

Q. Silver Birch backlane (especially at the intersection of bikepath off of Willowdale). When they clean the bikebath, can they clean out the backlane so all the snow does not get pushed into the backlane. Very difficult to get out if there is a big snow. (Aug 06)

A. Response from Operations: This path is cleared with a trackless machine and these do not have the capability to clear the backlanes. Was brought to the attention of street crews. Combining bike paths and street crews this year so they will both be done at the same time if possible. (Sept 06)

I will check in the spring to see if there were problems this winter.

Q. Snow pushed into piles and hard to see – Left off of Silver Birch onto Elmdale & Left off of Elmdale onto Willowdale. (Sept 06)

A. Response from Operations: This has been added as part of our snow pick up program. (Oct 06)

I will check in the spring to see if there were problems this winter.
