Parks and Trees

Q. I am not sure if you know how many people walk/run/bike/horseback, north and south along 34th street, south of Richmond but it is a good number, this along with the increase traffic could one day lead to a serious incident. Could the city cut the grass growing in the ditch on the West side so walkers/runners/bikers could use this areas instead of the road? (Sept 07)

A. Response from operations: This area is not maintained on a regular schedule. We cut the shoulders in the fall prior to winter. People can use the east site as there is a wide buffer adjacent to 34th. (Oct 07)

I will follow up on this in the fall.

Q . The trees on the west side of 34th were trimmed while the ground was very wet and the machinery made some deep ruts in the ground. A large claw-type piece of machinery was used to `rake' up the debris and in doing so left ruts as well as damaging branches left on some of the trees. No matter how careful the machine operators were, it was impossible to clean up all the tree trimmings. Consequently now the grass cutters are having to go around the debris, for safety, and the grass isn't being cut as close to the trees as it could be. (Jun 07)

A. Response from Operations: Once it drys up, we will get in and do some cleanup. (Jun 07)

A. Response from Operations: Tree debris on west side was cleaned up in the summer. (Oct 07)

Q. The ditch along the north side of Richmond west of 34th has not mowed yet this year and it appears as though some type of underground work was done and nothing was cleaned up. Do you have an idea of when this is going to be cleaned up? (Jun 07)

A. Response from Operations: The grass has been mowed. (Jun 07)

Response from Development Services: The underground work was done by Manitoba Hydro. (Jun 07)

Response from Manitoba Hydro: I spoke with our Engineering group and there is an agreement in place with the City, to leave restoration until later this summer/early fall to allow trenching to settle. We have already requested quotes to have a landscaper restore the ditches then.(Jun 07)

Update from Development Services: Hydro completed there work last fall and were supposed to complete the landscaping this spring. A contractor is hired to do the work but at the last minute MTS has come to the table and said that they have to do some upgrades in the same area so everything has stopped till they complete there work. The work and landscaping should be completed later this year.

A. Response from Manitoba Hydro: Final landscaping will be done and grass seed will planted near the end of this month, so that it comes up in the spring. (Oct 07)

A. Response from Operations: This area is on scheduled maintenance. (Oct 07)
