Q
. Can we get additional lighting in Parkdale Park?
Reponse from Development Services:
It has been determined that increased lighting will unfortunately not correct this problem, and in fact, has been shown to
actually escalate the issues associated with vandalism. Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design ( CPTED) training is one
such program which has been used by City officials to help address this concern. Lighting can in some locations be very
beneficial, an example of this is Stanley Park. This park has the advantage of large open areas and great visibility from all sides.
Lighting in this area has proved to be very beneficial for access throughout this park.
The City has the same type of lighting in Rideau Park and this park has regrettably seen an increase in vandalism. Poor
views from the street and the general landscape of the park with the addition of the lighting has provided vandals
with the tools to increase the vandalism in this park. The lighting allows them to have a great view for approaching
police or community members and the landscape and poor sight lines prevent surveillance by the neighborhood residents.
Based on these factors, the City is unable to provide any additional lighting in the Parkdale Heights park as the
design of this park does not allow for any outside sight lines from the street, similar to Rideau Park. Reduced visibility
from the adjacent streets restricts police surveillance and passing vehicles to observe potential vandalism. With
reduced surveillance and if lighting was increased in this park, the advantage now goes to the vandals.
The installation of lighting in parks is based on a professional evaluation with Parks Staff and the Brandon Police
Services. Issues such as sight lines, activities in the park, and most of all, commitment from the neighborhood to watch
and report unlawful activities in the park are all part of the evaluation process. The City has found that neighborhoods
which provide some form of partnership with Parks Staff as well as the Brandon Police Service in looking after the
park, greatly reduces the amount of vandalism being experienced. The City would like to encourage this form of
surveillance with regards to your concerns.(Aug 07)
Q.
What is happening in the green space off of Parkdale?
A. Development has started on some residential dwellings.
This space has always been zoned residential and is now being developed.
I dropped a letter to the residents around this area and
you can view it by clicking on: New Development at 30 Parkdale. This
will give you a brief history of the development along with some rough drawings of the proposed development.

Parkdale Park – Can we get some more lights put on the path?
A lot of seniors walk in the park after dusk. It has been talked
about for a lot of years but nothing has been done. (Sept 06)

When are we going to finish the circle around the retention pond
on Durum. (Oct 06)
A.
I had a meeting with Rick Bailey from Operations in November of
2006 and he asked what we might want to do with this area. I sent
a letter to the residents surrounding the area asking if they would
like to form a committee to start forming ideas on what we could
do with this. A high majority of the residents wanted the green
space left as is with no changes made. This issue has been left
but can be re-visited in the future if desired by the area. (Jan
