WHAT YA AT?

This is a saying many mainlanders seem to have trouble with.  Primarily it is asking someone what they are doing. It can be used in a number of ways depending on the situation one would care to blurt it out.  For example, in an everyday situation in it's most common use, when greeting a fellow person. "hey, what ya at?"  The appropriate response to this regardless of what you are doing is " not too much b'ye, (then what you are doing followed by) what a you at?" then proceed to have your conversation.

EX: Newfie 1 comes up to Newfie 2 who is fixing his bike.

NEWFIE 1: Hey what ya at?

NEWFIE 2: Not too much b'ye just fixin the bike, what a you at?

As you can see this is a fairly easy concept to grasp.  But like anything in the Newfie language, a word or phrase can mean more then one thing depending on the tone it is used and in the situation in which it is said.

EX: Newfie 1 comes up to Newfie 2 who is completely dismantling his buddies new bike.

NEWFIE 1 : (SHOUTING) WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU AT?

NEWFIE 2 : (timidly) Not much b'ye just lookin at y'er bike

Hopefully by now you are getting the idea of what I am talkin about.  There is in fact a complete Newfoundland dictionary available and should you talk to a newfie and wonder if the word he used in scrabble was in fact a real word please click on the like to the NEWFOUNDLAND DICTIONARY
