This comedy by William Shakespeare takes place largely in the forest of Arden, where many of the principal characters have been exiled because of conflicts between brothers. As with any Romance, there are rustic characters, disguises, misunderstandings, love, and, of course, a happy ending. The play features the famous, "All the World's a Stage" speech.
Shakespeare used songs to enhance this pastoral play, and we have included them as well as some short dance sequences. The music has been written by Brandon's own John Blyth especially for this production, and dance sequences have been choreographed by Barbara Ehnes featuring senior dancers from the Brandon School of Dance.
Synopsis: Orlando, a young man of noble birth, complains because his older brother Oliver has tried very hard to keep him uneducated and to give him nothing to do. Oliver is jealous because people like Orlando better. Oliver conspires to have Orlando killed in a wrestling match, but Orlando wins the match. Then, fearing for his life, Orlando escapes into the forest of Arden. Meanwhile, the Duke and his court have been exiled by the Duke's younger brother, who is now the new Duke Frederick. Frederick initially allows the old Duke's daughter Rosalind to stay at court as company for his own daughter, Celia. Eventually he becomes angry and banishes Rosalind. Celia follows her into the forest, the ladies disguised as a simple brother and sister and accompanied by Touchstone, the court fool.
Orlando and Rosalind met very briefly before each of them went to the forest. It was love at first sight. They meet again in the forest, and the disguised Rosalind leads Orlando on a merry chase to test his love and teach him the true meaning of love. The lovers also meet the exiled Duke and his court as well as some interesting country folk. After some adventures and repentances, the play ends with a quadruple wedding and a celebration.
