Uploading

Downloading WS_FTP

Note: Some Internet Service Providers require a phone call to prepare a web space for you. The Wave may have this prerequisite. You will NOT be successful until this has been done.

Also, there are a number of places on the Internet to get free Web Space. These can usually be found in the same places you can get free email addresses.

Using Internet Explorer, go to conrad.albertson.com on the Internet

Go to the HTML page by clicking on the Learning HTML link in the left frame

On the HTML page in the right frame, click on the link to WS_FTP

Click "Save File"

At the college, put the file into your account on W:\ drive (at home use your hard drive c:\)

When the file has finished downloading (it may take 10-20 minutes), minimize all your programs

Installing WS_FTP

Double click on My Computer

Double click on your account W:\ (at home, double click on c:\)

Double click the icon for WS_FTPLE

Click "Continue" to install the program

Choose "I am a student"

Choose "I will use WS_FTPLE at school"

Click "Accept"

Click "OK"

Click "OK"

Click "OK"

Click "OK"

Click "OK"

Connecting to Your
Internet Service Provider (ISP)

Now double click the shortcut to WS_FTPLE to start the program

In the session properties box under the General Tab, Click "New"

Type in your profile name (ie. Conrad's Web)

NOTE: From this point on, the entries may be quite case sensitive. Unless you have a user ID that contains capital letters, it is usually safer to enter the following data in lower case.

Type in the host name address of the Internet Service Provider you are currently using

For Sympatico, this is mts.net

For Techplus, try techplus.com

For Escape, try escape.ca

For the Wave, try home.westman.wave.ca

For Prairie Online, try ?

For Sprint Canada, try ?

Very carefully type in the user ID for your current Internet account

(ie if your email is conrad@mb.sympatico.ca, your user ID is conrad. Nothing else will work here. Don't try assigning yourself a new ID at this point, because the network only knows you as the ID you were issued.)

Very carefully type in the password for your current Internet account

Nothing else will work here. Don't try assigning yourself a new password at this point, because the network only knows you using the password you use to login)

Click "OK"

If everything is correct, you should now have the remote site (ie. Sympatico) in the right window, and your local hard drive in the left window.

Using WS_FTP to Upload (Publish)
Your Files to the World Wide Web

At the college, scroll down in the left window until you locate drive W:\

Double click on drive W:\

At home, scroll down in the left window until you locate drive c:\

Double click on drive c:\

Double click on your WWW folder to open it

Highlight all the HTML files and images that you wish to UPLOAD

(Hint: Click the top file and then press and hold the Control key on your keyboard and click one at a time on the rest of the files you want to upload. If you have other files like zips, do not choose them for uploading as they are not needed on the server and will take up precious space you could be using for pages and graphics. Sympatico for example has a 2 MB limit on personal web space. This is about 1 and a half floppy disks worth of data. Read the help files for your Internet Service Provider to check on this and other limitations. Most service providers charge extra for hosting a business site.

Once you have chosen the files you want to upload, click the arrow pointing to the right in the middle of the two windows. This will send the files from your hard drive (or account) to your Internet Service Provider. They are now live on the world wide web and can be viewed at:

For Sympatico: mts.net/~userID/filename.htm

Substitute your userID and the start file for your website in the address above. If you are on Sympatico, and your first file is index.htm, you can omit the actual file name, and this shorter address will properly access your web site:

mts.net/~userID

Check on the help files for your Internet Service Provider to find out what the start page must be in order to use the shorter address on your web page. Alternatively, you could try the three most common, which are index.html. welcome.html and default.html. Normally .htm and .html extensions are interchangeable. You do have to code them exactly in your links however.
