Internet Course

Day 1

Lesson: A brief history of the Internet , (a network of networks) , International (ISP's) , Online Services * (AOL, CompuServe etc.)
Practice: Start and use a World Wide Web Browser using URL's , hyperlinks and web pages . Start the Internet Research Project . * [To date NONE of the Online Services offer local calling numbers from the Brandon area. Full long distance rates do apply. With the telephone plans, some restrictions apply, the Online Service call numbers are excluded from the reduced calling rates.]

Day 2

Lesson: Structure of the Internet: Addressing , packet switching , InterNIC , domain names DNS , DNS registration , and protocols . ( FTP , HTTP , SMTP , POP3 , and Usenet NEWS )
Lesson: Advertising, Banners , Security on the Internet for banking etc. (128-bit encryption , and cookies .
Practice: Use Internet Explorer to go to sites where you can get more information on country codes and the structure of the Internet.

Day 3

Lesson: Internet Explorer: cache and temparary files , bookmarks/favourites , and the history list. What is a proxy server or firewall ?
Lesson: Search Strategies , Search Engine Facts and Fun includes math operators and boolean searches. Searching glossary of terms .
Lesson: Finding resources on the web: using keywords in Search Engines , Crawlers, Spiders , Indexes, Directories , Portals , Meta Search Engines and sticky content . Mirror Sites.
Practice: Use the history list and favourites to return to previous pages. Manipulate, organize and delete favourites.

Day 4

Lesson: Types of software: Shareware , freeware , cardware, trial-demo's, others
Lesson: Computer Viruses and Antivirus programs
Practice: Search the Internet for various topics including information on viruses , hoaxes , Trojan horses and antivirus software [ Norton Antivirus and Mcafee Antivirus ]

Day 5


Lesson:Computer File Formats , Winzip and file compression

Lesson: Plugins for Netscape Communicator and Internet Explorer
Lesson: File Transfer Protocol (FTP) : getting all that free or almost free software.
Practice: Download and install Winzip . Locate and download (save to hard drive) more software. Install downloaded software so it can be used on your computer.

Day 6

Review: File Transfer Protocol (FTP) : getting all that free or almost free software.
Practice: Use Communicator to locate and download (save to hard drive) software. Install downloaded software so it can be used on your computer.

 

Day 7

Lesson: Netiquette , acronyms , and FAQ's
Lesson: Email , listservs and newsgroups and more newsgroups.
Practice: Use Microsoft Outlook to send and receive email and find and use smilie's . Locate newsgroups and listservs on the Internet.

Day 8

Course Evaluation: Fill in and submit Course Evaluation Forms.
Lesson: VRML: Cyberspace as depicted in the movies.
Lesson: IRC , MIRC , Instant Messaging ( ICQ , AOL Messenger), NetMeeting
Practice: Locate tutorials and information on the various methods of communication on the Internet. Check to see which ones will and won't work in a networked environment.
