It's just one year past the last twister and Brandon gets flooded! (July 7. 2005) | |
|
Just as the melting waters of last winter's snow seem to dissepate and Farmers can finally work on their soil, the city and surrounding area gets hammered
by one of the biggest rain storms ever to hit Brandon. Within three hours of blistering rain Thursday night, the city has been covered with nearly four
inches of rain (100 mm). A number of intersections including 18th and Richmond, 1st and Richmond, 10th and Victoria, 26th and Pacific and some lesser trafficed areas were turned into temporary lakes. The traffic lights in the busiest intersection in town, 18th and Victoria, went out. Authorities were forced to shut down 18th and Richmond as well as 1st and Richmond. The surrounding area (between Tilsten & Reston and nearby Pierson) got hit by Tornadoes. Winds in the city reached over 100km/hr. While residences directly situated at Richmond and 1st Street ended up with flooded Basements, our house, less than a block away from first street, had been spared and stayed absolutely dry. Even our roof withstood the storm and didn't allow a drop of water to come through. Thank God! As we were watching the lightning and the streaming waters, we didn't even realize the size of the downpoor and the flood just next door to us. So we didn't bother of documenting the event. Therefore all of the pictures and film clips posted here are pulled off from other web pages (i.e. http://www.ebrandon.ca) or have been emailed to me. |
| The NASR decided to take a media stop in Brandon this year. It was a perfect sunny and warm day and of course I had to be there to see the
vehicles up close. My kids came with me to see the spectacle and maybe learn a little bit about enviro-friendly technology. Although they didn't really
understand the technology behind it, they got a good basic idea of how the cars are running. And that was my main goal. Out of the 18 teams were 3 from Canada. The remaining teams were all from the US. One of the Canadian teams - Red River College (in Winnipeg)- run actually the first time. Despite all the problems they encountered, the team was able to finish 16th (nearly 117 hours). That was quite an achivement. The winner of the race was the University of Michigan. Finishing the race in just under 54 hours. The fastest Canadian team was the University of Waterloo ranking fifth with 57.44 hours. The pictures are a mix of my shots and images pulled of the Internet (i.e. http://www.ebrandon.ca, http://www.nasc2005.americansolarchallenge.org). |
